Summary
In this vachana, Basavanna warns against speech that lacks lived knowing. Like one who has not known pain speaking about it, words spoken without experience do not carry truth.
He then declares that his Bhaktas are his life and future. His Pramathas too are his life and future. They are not secondary to the path; they are the very field through which the path is sustained.
Basavanna concludes that Kudalasangama’s Sharanas are Mukhalingas. The Sharanas become the visible face of Linga, the living presence through whom Linga is encountered.
Imagery & Symbolic Relevance
The first image is speech without knowing pain. Basavanna cautions against speaking from outside experience. What has not been lived cannot be spoken with true weight.
The second image is the Bhaktas as life and future. Basavanna places his life, direction, and continuance in relation to the Bhaktas.
The third image is the Pramathas as life and future. The Pramathas are also named as essential to his spiritual continuance.
The final image is the Sharanas as Mukhalingas. This is the central image of the vachana. The Sharanas are not merely devotees by name; they are the visible face of Linga before the seeker.
Together, these images show the difference between speech from outside and recognition through living presence. Words without experience remain weak, but the Bhaktas, Pramathas, and Sharanas carry the living field of Kudalasangama Deva.
Lingayoga
In Lingayoga, this vachana places the seeker before living realization. Linga is not approached only through words or private understanding.
The Sharanas as Mukhalingas become the living point of recognition. Through them, the seeker is brought from speech about the path into contact with the path.
The practical movement here is humility before lived presence. Basavanna asks the seeker not to rely on words without experience, but to recognize the Bhaktas, Pramathas, and Sharanas as essential to spiritual life.
Editorial Commentary
Mukhalinga means that the Sharana stands as the visible face or living presence of Linga.
The opening warning about speech is important. Basavanna is not rejecting speech itself; he is rejecting speech that has no lived ground. The Bhaktas, Pramathas, and Sharanas correct that emptiness because they embody the path as living presence.
The reader should therefore see this vachana as a teaching on reliance upon realized company. For Basavanna, the Sharanas are not ornament around the path. They are the living face through which Kudalasangama’s Linga becomes recognizable.

Bhakta Sthala Vachana 617 — Untasted Fruit, Unspent Gold
Bhakta Sthala Vachana 617 supports this vachana by teaching that without the anubhava of Kudalasangama Deva’s Sharanas, outward position or condition has no true value. Vachana 410 carries the same principle into Maheshwara Sthala: words without lived knowing are insufficient, while Bhaktas, Pramathas, and Sharanas become the living field of recognition.

Prasadi Sthala Vachana 882 — The Grace of the Company of the True
Prasadi Sthala Vachana 882 advances this movement by showing the full fruit of true company. Vachana 410 names Kudalasangama’s Sharanas as Mukhalingas, the visible face of Linga. Vachana 882 carries this into Prasadi Sthala, where through the company of the true and the Mahānubhāvas, one comes to know Guru, Linga, Jangama, Prasada, and oneself before Kudalasangama Deva.
