Summary
In this vachana, Basavanna speaks of Purvashraya, the prior association carried by water and food.
Water may receive many impurities into itself, yet its prior association can be removed. Food prepared through water and fire is also questioned, because what still carries prior association is not immediately fit to be offered to Linga.
Basavanna does not leave this as a doubt. He asks how the prior association of water and food is removed, and then gives the solution clearly.
The prior association of water is removed through the Padatirtha of Jangama. The prior association of food is removed through the Prasada of Jangama.
He then says that this subtle understanding belongs to Basavanna’s lineage in relation to Prabhudeva, and is not easily grasped by others. This points to Lingayoga, as the lived understanding through which the role of Jangama, Padatirtha, and Prasada becomes clear.
The teaching is direct: water and food become fit for sacred offering not by ordinary handling alone, but through their relation to Jangama. Jangama Padatirtha and Jangama Prasada remove prior association and make the offering proper before Kudalasangama Deva.
Imagery & Symbolic Relevance
The first image is water. Water comes into contact with many things and carries prior association. Basavanna asks how such association is removed when water is to enter sacred use.
The second image is food prepared through water and fire. Cooking does not by itself settle the question of fitness. If prior association remains, the food cannot be offered to Linga as it is.
The question “How is this removed?” gives the vachana its movement. Basavanna first identifies the difficulty and then gives the method of correction.
Padatirtha of Jangama removes the prior association of water. This means that water becomes sacredly fit through its relation to the feet of Jangama.
Jangama Prasada removes the prior association of food. Food becomes fit not merely through cooking, but through its relation to Jangama Prasada.
The final reference to Prabhudeva and Basavanna’s lineage should be understood carefully. Basavanna is not withholding the answer. He has already given the solution. What remains subtle is the capacity to understand why Jangama Padatirtha and Jangama Prasada have this purifying force. That understanding comes through Lingayoga, as lived realization.
Lingayoga
In Lingayoga, this vachana teaches that sacred fitness depends on right relation.
Water and food are not made fit by physical preparation alone. They become fit through Jangama Padatirtha and Jangama Prasada.
For Prasadi Sthala, the point is exact: Prasada is not merely cooked food. It is food whose prior association has been removed through Jangama and is therefore rightly received as sacred.
Editorial Commentary
“Purvashraya” should be retained. It means prior association or earlier connection carried by water or food.
“Padatirtha” should be read here as the sacred water of Jangama’s feet. It removes the prior association of water.
“Jangama Prasada” should also remain central. It removes the prior association of food and makes it fit for sacred receiving.
The subtle point is that this solution is understood only through the lived path of Basava Yoga or Lingayoga, where Jangama, Padatirtha, and Prasada are known in their proper relation.

Maheshwara Vachana 421 supports this vachana by teaching that Jangama is the mouth of Linga and the proper living point of sacred offering.
In Vachana 1194, water and food become sacredly fit through Jangama Padatirtha and Jangama Prasada. In Maheshwara Vachana 421, nourishment reaches fulfillment when directed to Jangama. Both vachanas place Jangama at the living center of right offering.
Advancing Vachana
Pranalingi Sthala Vachana 1272 — Established in Prāṇa-Linga
Pranalingi Vachana 1272 advances this teaching by showing mature consecrated receiving. There, nothing is touched unless it has first been offered to Linga, and life abides in Prasada.
In Vachana 1194, water and food become fit through Jangama Padatirtha and Jangama Prasada. In Vachana 1272, this advances into Pranalingi discipline: every act of touching, receiving, and using is governed by prior offering and life in Prasada before Kudalasangama Deva.
