Summary
In this vachana, Basavanna confesses that his spiritual appearance has become like a torn and patched disguise.
It should hold together, but it has no strength. It splits open and becomes a matter for ridicule.
When the Jangama comes to the house, the seeker tries to cover his face and hide. Yet Kudalasangama Deva knows what is concealed. The vachana exposes the failure of outward appearance when inner truth is absent.
Imagery & Symbolic Relevance
The torn disguise is the first image. It suggests an appearance that was arranged to look whole, but cannot remain intact.
Basavanna uses this to speak of spiritual pretence. A religious form may be worn, but if it lacks inward strength, it begins to split.
The breaking open brings shame. What was meant to cover the inner condition becomes itself the cause of exposure.
The arrival of the Jangama is decisive. Jangama is living presence, and before such presence, concealment becomes difficult.
The attempt to cover the face shows the instinct to hide from truth. The seeker does not want to be seen as he is.
But Kudalasangama Deva knows. No covering can hide the divided condition from the Divine.
Lingayoga
In Lingayoga, outer form must be supported by inward truth.
The Anga may wear the marks of devotion and appear ready for worship, but if the mind remains divided, the form cannot hold.
The Jangama’s arrival tests the reality of practice. Living presence exposes whether devotion has become genuine or only assumed.
Practice matures when the seeker stops hiding and allows false appearance to fall before Kudalasangama Deva.
Editorial Commentary
This vachana is a confession of exposed pretence.
Basavanna shows that spiritual costume cannot protect the seeker when living truth stands at the door.
