Vachana 833 — Who Revealed This Path?

Summary

Basavanna says that because he did not know how to worship Guru, Linga, and Jangama in earlier births, he was brought into many births. The burden of repeated becoming is traced to failure in the living sacred relation.

He then asks who showed him the path of Guru, the path of Linga, the path of Jangama, and the path of Padodaka-Prasada. Each question removes the claim that he discovered the path by himself.

The answer comes in the inward turn: the very mind that shows is known as Kudalasangama Deva. Once this is known, no further bhava remains for him. The Sharana-stage teaching is clear: the path is not self-invented. Guru, Linga, Jangama, Padodaka, and Prasada are revealed by Kudalasangama Deva, and when this revelation becomes inwardly known, the cycle of becoming loses its hold.

Imagery & Symbolic Relevance

The earlier births form the opening image. Basavanna does not begin from pride in present attainment. He begins from the recognition that failure to worship Guru, Linga, and Jangama has carried him through many births.

Guru, Linga, and Jangama appear first as the sacred triad whose worship was missed. This missed relation is not treated as a small omission. It is the cause of continued becoming.

The repeated question “who showed?” gives the vachana its structure. Basavanna asks who showed the Guru-path, who showed the Linga-path, who showed the Jangama-path, and who showed the Padodaka-Prasada path. The repetition dismantles self-claim.

The Guru-path points to guidance. The Linga-path points to direct relation with the Divine. The Jangama-path points to living sacred presence. The Padodaka-Prasada path points to receiving and offering through sanctified relation. Together they form the living path of the Sharana.

The mind that shows is the decisive image. Basavanna does not leave revelation outside as borrowed instruction alone. He recognizes that the showing mind itself is Kudalasangama Deva.

The final line, “there is no further bhava for me,” completes the movement. When the revealer is known, the path is no longer fragmented, and becoming no longer binds in the same way.

Lingayoga

In Lingayoga, this vachana teaches that the sacred path must be received as revelation, not claimed as personal discovery. Guru, Linga, Jangama, Padodaka, and Prasada are not separate outward items to be named; they are the path made visible through grace.

For Sharana Sthala, the practice-point is humility before the revealed path. The Sharana does not say, “I found the way by my own mind.” He recognizes that the mind which shows the way is itself illumined by Kudalasangama Deva.

This also protects the path from fragmentation. Guru-path, Linga-path, Jangama-path, and Padodaka-Prasada path must not be separated into isolated forms. They are gathered in the one revelation through which becoming is overcome.

Supporting Vachana

Pranalingi Sthala Vachana 1041 — The Living Jangama Within

Pranalingi Vachana 1041 supports this teaching by saying that without Jangama, Linga cannot be seen; without Jangama, Guru and Prasada also remain unknown. It further says that the body is Bhakta and prana is Jangama, and that Kudalasangama Deva alone can make this vast truth speakable. This prepares Vachana 833 directly. In Vachana 1041, Guru, Linga, and Prasada become visible through living Jangama-awareness; in Vachana 833, Basavanna asks who showed the paths of Guru, Linga, Jangama, and Padodaka-Prasada, and recognizes Kudalasangama Deva as the revealer.

Advancing Vachana

Aikya Sthala Vachana 1154 — The Revelation of Linga-Aikya

Aikya Vachana 1154 advances this teaching by showing Chennabasavanna as the one who established the living foundations of Guru, Linga, Jangama, Padodaka, and Prasada, made the experiential path of Shatsthala clear, removed delusion, and showed Linga-Aikya. This is the natural Aikya-stage continuation of Vachana 833. In Sharana Vachana 833, the seeker asks who revealed the sacred paths and recognizes Kudalasangama Deva as the showing presence; in Aikya Vachana 1154, that revelation reaches fulfillment as the path is made experiential, delusion is removed, and Linga-Aikya is shown.
