Vachana 1099 — The Grace That Restores Life

Summary

Basavanna gives testimony to grace received through the living fellowship of the Sharanas. Madivala Ayya cherished his vachanas, cleansed the impurities of his mind at every step, and protected him by bringing back the life that had departed.

The restoration described here is not merely bodily survival. It is the return of spiritual vitality. The mind that had become clouded is cleansed; the life that had weakened is restored; the seeker who had lost inward aliveness comes truly to live again.

The second movement widens the field of grace. Through Madivala Ayya’s compassion, Basavanna beholds the abiding state of Marulu Shankara Deva. He then calls Kinnari Brahmayya to witness. The vachana is therefore not only personal gratitude, but testimony within the living network of realized Sharanas.

Thus the vachana shows that spiritual life is not self-sustained. Grace flows through the Sharanas. One Sharana purifies and restores; another’s state becomes visible; another is called to witness. In this fellowship, life returns before Kudalasangama Deva.

Imagery & Symbolic Relevance

The first image is the cherishing of Basavanna’s vachanas. His utterances are not dismissed or corrected from a distance. They are received, valued, and held by Madivala Ayya. This gives the restoration its first tenderness.

The second image is the mind cleansed at every step. Purification is not shown as one sudden event. The phrase suggests continuous guidance, repeated removal of impurity, and steady accompaniment. The mind is purified as the path is walked.

The third image is life brought back after departure. This is the strongest image in the vachana. A person may still appear alive outwardly, yet inwardly lose the life of devotion, clarity, and participation in grace. Madivala Ayya restores that lost life.

The fourth image is the compassion of Madivala Ayya. Basavanna does not present the restoration as self-generated. The cause is compassion flowing through a realized Sharana.

The fifth image is the state of Marulu Shankara Deva. Basavanna sees not merely a person, but an abiding state. The realized condition of another Sharana becomes visible through Madivala’s compassion.

The final image is Kinnari Brahmayya as witness. Basavanna calls him to behold what has happened. The testimony of grace is not kept private. It is spoken within Sharana-sanga, where realized beings recognize the work of grace in one another.

Lingayoga

In Lingayoga, this vachana teaches that the seeker is not the sole agent of restoration. The Anga is the recipient: its words are cherished, its mind is cleansed, and its life is restored. Kudalasangama Deva remains the source, while the Sharanas become the living channels and witnesses of grace.

For Sharana Sthala, the practice-point is gratitude and receptivity within Sharana-sanga. Do not try to sustain spiritual life by isolated effort alone. Allow the realized presence of the Sharanas to cleanse, restore, and reveal.

The movement also protects humility. Basavanna does not say, “I restored myself.” He says that Madivala Ayya cherished, cleansed, protected, and brought back the life that had departed. True life returns as gifted life.

Supporting Vachana

Pranalingi Sthala Vachana 1117 — Teach My Mind, Not Merely My Speech

Pranalingi Vachana 1117 supports this teaching by showing Madivala Machayya as the one who corrects the mind rather than merely outward speech, wealth, or social conduct. There, Basavanna values Madivala because he turns attention to the root: the mind itself must be taught and corrected. This prepares Vachana 1099 directly. In Vachana 1117, Madivala’s grace addresses the mind at its source; in Vachana 1099, that correction becomes continuous purification, and the life that had departed is brought back through Madivala Ayya’s compassion.

Advancing Vachana

Aikya Sthala Vachana 1238 — The State of Marulashankaradeva

Aikya Vachana 1238 advances this teaching by showing the full absorption of body, mind, feeling, and inner faculties into the state of Kudalasangama Deva, and by naming the state of Marulashankaradeva as seen and lived through the witness of Kinnari Brahmayya. This is the natural Aikya fulfillment of Vachana 1099. In Sharana Vachana 1099, Basavanna is restored to life through Madivala Ayya’s compassion and beholds Marulu Shankara Deva’s abiding state; in Aikya Vachana 1238, that beheld state becomes fully lived as total absorption into Kudalasangama Deva.
