Vachana 333- The Unripe Seed

Summary

In this vachana, Basavanna asks how he can call himself a bhakta before the Sharanas of Kudalasangama Deva.

He gives the image of an areca nut within a mango fruit. The mango suggests sweetness, ripeness, and fullness, while the areca nut remains hard and unlike the mango’s nature.

In the same way, the seeker may stand among the Sharanas and still remain inwardly unsoftened. Basavanna does not claim devotion by nearness. He asks whether he has truly become worthy of the name bhakta before Kudalasangama Deva’s realized devotees.

Imagery & Symbolic Relevance

The mango fruit is the first image. It represents sweetness, ripeness, and nourishing fullness.

Within it appears an areca nut. This is the contrasting image. It is hard, dry, and unlike the sweetness that surrounds it.

The force of the image lies in this mismatch. Something may be placed inside a field of sweetness and yet remain unchanged in its own nature.

Basavanna applies this to himself before the Sharanas. The Sharanas are ripened in devotion; their presence reveals the seeker’s own hardness.

To call oneself a bhakta before them requires more than association. It requires inward softening and transformation.

The question is therefore an act of humility. Basavanna sees that proximity to the Sharanas does not make him equal to their state.

Lingayoga

In Lingayoga, the Anga must not confuse nearness with transformation.

One may be near Linga, Jangama, and Sharana-sanga, yet still carry an inward hardness that has not softened into bhakti.

The mango and areca nut image shows this difference clearly. Sacred surroundings are not enough unless the inner being becomes changed by them.

Practice matures when the seeker allows the presence of the Sharanas to expose hardness and awaken true devotion before Kudalasangama Deva.

Editorial Commentary

This vachana is a discipline of honest self-measurement.

Basavanna does not deny the greatness of Sharana-sanga; he refuses to claim that nearness to the Sharanas has already made him equal to them.
