Vachana 386- The Unripe Fruit

Summary

In this vachana, Basavanna says that his bhakti is not even as much as a small mustard measure.

Yet others call him a bhakta and a true practitioner. He asks what sin he has committed that such praise has come upon him.

He then gives two images: can fruit be plucked before it ripens, and can one who has not stood as a warrior be praised for heroic splendor? The vachana teaches that recognition before ripening is dangerous. Before Kudalasangama Deva, praise cannot replace actual maturity.

Imagery & Symbolic Relevance

The mustard measure is the first image. Basavanna uses it to show how little devotion he sees in himself.

The names “bhakta” and “samayācāri” represent public recognition. They may sound honorable, but Basavanna receives them with alarm rather than pride.

The unripe fruit gives the central warning. Fruit may appear formed, but if it is plucked too early, its sweetness has not matured.

The untested warrior gives the second warning. One who has not entered the field of courage cannot rightly be praised for heroic beauty.

Basavanna applies both images to spiritual life. A person may be called a devotee before devotion has ripened. He may be praised before the test has been faced.

The final complaint is therefore not false modesty. Basavanna sees public praise as a burden when it exceeds inward truth.

Lingayoga

In Lingayoga, the Anga must not accept a name before the state is real.

Marks, titles, praise, and public regard may gather around the seeker, but practice must still mature inwardly.

The unripe fruit warns against premature completion. The untested warrior warns against speech that grants victory before the struggle has been faced.

Practice matures when the seeker refuses to be carried by reputation and remains truthful before Linga.

Editorial Commentary

This vachana questions praise that comes before ripening.

Basavanna shows that spiritual recognition can become dangerous when it names a state the seeker has not yet realized.
