Summary
In this vachana, Basavanna sees the guide of bhakti as a father who comes with two hands of grace.
In the left hand is a bowl of milk. In the right hand is a staff. The father feeds the child, but he also disciplines and directs.
Basavanna recognizes Kudalasangama Deva in this form: the one who gives nourishment and also shows the path of bhakti. The vachana teaches that devotion matures through both tenderness and correction.
Imagery & Symbolic Relevance
The bowl of milk is the first image. Milk represents nourishment, care, and strengthening. It is given to one who is still growing.
The staff is the second image. It represents correction, discipline, and guidance. It is not cruelty, but protection from wandering.
The two hands must be read together. Grace is not only soft nourishment, and discipline is not separate from compassion. The same father gives both.
The father image gives the vachana its force. A father does not merely comfort the child; he raises, trains, guards, and directs.
Basavanna sees Kudalasangama Deva as this father of bhakti. He feeds the seeker and shows the way forward.
The path of bhakti is therefore not self-invented. It is received through living guidance, nourishment, and correction.
Lingayoga
In Lingayoga, the Anga must accept both nourishment and discipline.
Milk strengthens devotion. The staff corrects distraction, pride, and instability.
The seeker may desire only comfort, but the path also requires correction. Without discipline, bhakti remains childish. Without nourishment, discipline becomes dry.
Practice matures when the seeker receives both as grace from Kudalasangama Deva.
Editorial Commentary
