Vachana 606 — “The True Mark — Beyond Birth, Beyond Death”

Summary

Basavanna overturns both scholarly and birth-based measures of spiritual worth. One may be learned in the four Vedas, yet without Linga such learning does not establish sacred standing. Conversely, one whom society calls Shvapacha becomes worthy when established in Linga.

The Linga-bearer’s speech is worthy, his presence sanctifies the world, and his Prasada becomes nectar to Basavanna. The one who knows and worships Kudalasangama Deva stands above the six philosophical systems. Lived Linga-relation—not learning, caste, or inherited status—is the true spiritual mark.

Imagery & Symbolic Relevance

Lingayoga

In Pranalingi Sthala, Linga must become an inwardly living relation that transforms speech, conduct, receiving, and recognition of others.

The seeker must not measure another by caste, birth, scholarship, or social reputation. The true test is whether Linga has become alive in the person and whether that relation has made speech, Prasada, and life spiritually fruitful.

The practical movement is from external classification to direct recognition of Linga.

Editorial Commentary

The contrast between the four-Veda scholar and the Linga-bearing Shvapacha governs the vachana.

Shvapacha should be retained because Basavanna deliberately takes a term of extreme social exclusion and overturns its authority through Linga.

The word applied to the Linga-less person must not be used to reaffirm caste contempt. Basavanna redirects the judgment: spiritual emptiness lies in separation from Linga, not in birth.

Amrita means deathless nectar. The line concerns receiving the Prasada of the Linga-bearer as sacred nourishment.

The Kannada does not explicitly develop a doctrine of an eternal witnessing principle, Shiva–Shakti cosmology, or existence before birth and after death. The supplied title should therefore not be used to impose those ideas upon the vachana. Its explicit concern is worth beyond birth-status, scholarly rank, and philosophical mastery.
