Summary
In this vachana, Basavanna asks what sacred company cannot do. He first gives the image of a caterpillar becoming a butterfly, showing that one form of life can pass into a transformed state.
He then gives the image of sandalwood. In the presence of sandalwood, even bitter and rough substances take on fragrance.
Basavanna applies this to the Sharanas of Kudalasangama Deva. In their presence, karma becomes purified. The vachana teaches that Sharana-sanga is not ordinary association; it is transforming nearness.

In Lingayoga, Sharana-sanga creates the field in which the Anga is transformed.
The caterpillar image shows that the practitioner can pass beyond the present condition. The sandalwood image shows that sustained nearness to the realized gives fragrance to the inner life.
Karma is purified not by outer association alone, but by entering the atmosphere of realized devotion.
Practice matures when the seeker allows the company of Kudalasangama Deva’s Sharanas to refine conduct, awareness, and devotion.
