Summary
In this vachana, Basavanna urges the seeker to worship Kudalasangama Deva before bodily decline takes hold.
He names the signs one by one: before grey hair appears, before the face changes, before the body weakens, before the teeth fall, before the back bends, before the hand needs a staff, before old age presses down, and before death comes near.
The teaching is one of immediacy. Human embodiment is the opportunity for worship; it must be used while strength, attention, and action are still available.
Imagery & Symbolic Relevance
The signs of aging form the main imagery of the vachana. Basavanna does not speak abstractly about time; he shows time acting upon the body.
Grey hair and facial change mark the first visible signs of decline. They warn that youth and strength are not permanent possessions.
Fallen teeth and a bent back show the body losing its former support. What once acted easily now becomes limited.
The staff represents dependence. When the hand must lean on a stick, bodily freedom has already narrowed.
Death is the final boundary. Basavanna’s repeated “before” presses the seeker toward worship while the body is still capable of serving the path.
Lingayoga
In Lingayoga, the body is not to be despised; it is to be used rightly while it remains fit for practice.
The Anga must turn toward Linga before weakness makes discipline difficult. Attention, posture, worship, service, and remembrance all depend on the living opportunity of embodied life.
This vachana asks the practitioner to treat the present body as a temporary instrument. Its value lies in being offered before it fails.
Practice matures when urgency becomes worship before Kudalasangama Deva.
Editorial Commentary
This vachana turns the signs of aging into spiritual instruction.
Basavanna asks the seeker to act before the body itself becomes a reminder of delay.
