Summary
In this vachana, Basavanna rejects inherited status as the ground of spiritual worth.
He says that wisdom is not gained through birth alone, and then calls the mind to wake up. This is important. The error is not only social; it is also inward. The mind has accepted caste, family, and origin as if they could decide truth.
Basavanna then gives the decisive correction: the Shiva-bhakta is the true Kulaja. Shiva-bhakta means a devotee whose life is turned toward Shiva through realization and surrender. Kulaja ordinarily means one of noble lineage. Basavanna changes the meaning. True lineage is not ancestry; it is living devotion.
When he says the devotee is neither merely “born” nor “unborn,” he is not denying physical birth. He is saying that the Sharana’s real identity cannot be reduced to bodily origin or social classification.
The Sharanas of Kudalasangama Deva are therefore beyond worldly measure. They are not higher within the old hierarchy; they stand outside its authority.
The teaching is clear: the body is born, society gives names, but realization belongs only to the one who lives in Shiva-bhakti.
Imagery & Symbolic Relevance
Birth is the first image. It gives a body, a family, and a place in society. Basavanna refuses to let these become spiritual credentials.
The awakened mind is the second image. The mind must stop repeating inherited judgments and learn to see through devotion.
The Shiva-bhakta as Kulaja is the central reversal. What the world assigns through descent, Basavanna assigns through realized devotion. Nobility is no longer biological; it is spiritual.
The phrase “neither born nor unborn” removes the last hold of origin-thinking. The Sharana has a body, but the truth of the Sharana is not confined to that body’s beginning.
The final image is the measureless Sharana. Caste, lineage, ritual status, and social rank can all be measured. The life established in Kudalasangama Deva cannot.
The movement of the vachana is compact but radical: birth is denied final authority, the mind is awakened, devotion becomes true lineage, and the Sharana is released from social measurement.
Lingayoga
In Lingayoga, this vachana teaches freedom from inherited identity.
The practice-point is direct: do not measure yourself or others by caste, family, ancestry, or social standing. Look for Shiva-bhakti, lived surrender, and truthful conduct.
For Sharana Sthala, this is not a change of rank. It is release from rank itself. The Sharana belongs to Kudalasangama Deva, not to the old measures of birth.
Editorial Commentary
This vachana should remain sharper than a general statement on equality. Basavanna is not simply saying that all births are equal. He is saying that birth does not decide wisdom, caste does not decide lineage, and inherited status cannot contain the Sharana. True Kulaja is the Shiva-bhakta.

Pranalingi Sthala Vachana 568 — The Alchemy of Inner Transformation
Pranalingi Vachana 568 supports this teaching by asking whether Bhakti and knowledge have any caste-boundary. It also uses the image of iron transformed into gold to show that spiritual worth comes through real transformation, not inherited identity.
This supports Vachana 602 directly. Vachana 602 says that the Shiva-bhakta is the true Kulaja. Vachana 568 gives the supporting principle: Bhakti and knowledge do not belong to caste; they belong to the one transformed before Kudalasangama Deva.
Advancing Vachana
Aikya Sthala Vachana 418 — Awareness in Act and Thought
Aikya Vachana 418 advances this teaching by carrying it into lived awareness. It teaches that conduct and thought must remain in awareness, that Linga must be seen in the living field of Jangama, and that before the Unborn there is no caste, impurity, or lineage.
Vachana 602 releases the Sharana from birth-based identity. Aikya Vachana 418 completes that movement: when the Unborn is recognized in living awareness, caste and lineage no longer govern perception, speech, or conduct. What was declared in Sharana Sthala becomes lived without division in Aikya.
