Vachana 1042 — The One Who Revealed the Beginningless

Summary

Basavanna offers a testimony of transformation through Prabhudeva’s grace. The Guru revealed the Beginning and the Beginningless, dissolved the hold of the worldly, established the Beyond, and revealed the Vast Reality. The seeker’s understanding is not presented as self-earned knowledge, but as what was shown by the realized Guru.

The vachana then moves from cosmic revelation into inward correction. Prabhudeva straightened the mind, showed the subtle path, made the seeker ready, caused bodily identification to fall away, and revealed the Great State. The work of the Guru is not merely instruction; it is inward reshaping.

The hidden root of former becoming is also uncovered, and the doubt concerning the path ahead is removed. This shows that the Guru’s work reaches both backward and forward: the roots of bondage are exposed, and the uncertainty of future movement is cleared.

Basavanna concludes with repeated reverence. He does not claim attainment. He bows again and again at the holy feet of Prabhudeva, who is established in Kudalasangama Deva. The whole vachana is therefore an act of grateful recognition: what was hidden became visible through the Guru’s revealing grace.

Imagery & Symbolic Relevance

The first movement is the revelation of Ādi and Anādi: the Beginning and the Beginningless. Basavanna places Prabhudeva’s teaching beyond ordinary instruction. The Guru reveals both manifestation and that which precedes manifestation.

The second movement is the dissolution of the worldly and the establishment of the Beyond. The world is not merely rejected; its binding force is loosened. The seeker is made to stand in relation to Para, the Beyond, rather than remain confined to transient identity.

The third image is Ghana, the Vast Reality. This points to fullness, depth, and weight. Prabhudeva does not reveal a partial truth, but the dense reality before which ordinary distinctions lose their authority.

The fourth image is the straightening of the mind. The mind is not described as absent, but as needing correction. It has wandered, bent, or moved out of alignment. The Guru restores direction.

The fifth image is the subtle path. This path cannot be grasped by ordinary outward perception. It must be shown. Basavanna also says that Prabhudeva made him ready, indicating that revelation requires ripening.

The sixth image is forgetting the body. This should not be read as hatred of the body. It means release from exclusive identification with the body as the self. Through the Guru’s grace, the seeker is opened to the Great State beyond bodily limitation.

The seventh image is the hidden former support. This refers to the concealed root of earlier becoming, the underlying support of bondage and conditioning. When that root is shown, the doubt concerning the path ahead is removed.

The final image is repeated bowing at Prabhudeva’s sacred feet. The feet mark the place where realized wisdom becomes accessible. Basavanna’s only response is reverence.

Lingayoga

In Lingayoga, this vachana shows the Guru as the revealer of what the seeker cannot uncover by personal effort alone. Arivu is illumined because the Guru reveals. Achara is corrected because the mind is straightened. Kayaka loses egoic direction because the body is no longer held as the center. Dasoha becomes gratitude at the Guru’s feet.

For Sharana Sthala, the practice-point is surrender to Guru-revealed truth. The seeker does not claim that he has discovered the Beginningless by his own power. He recognizes that Prabhudeva revealed, corrected, prepared, uncovered, and removed doubt.

The sequence also shows that realization is not merely a high insight. It includes correction of mind, readiness for the subtle path, loosening of body-identification, exposure of hidden conditioning, and the removal of uncertainty.

Supporting Vachana

Pranalingi Sthala Vachana 1016 — The Fulness of Pranalinga

Pranalingi Vachana 1016 supports this teaching by saying that Anubhava is the fulfillment of Arivu and that the greatness of Pranalinga is known through Śrī Guru’s grace. There, awareness becomes fulfilled through direct experience, and the Guru reveals the greatness of Pranalinga through images of absorption and non-separation. This prepares Vachana 1042 directly. In Vachana 1016, Guru’s grace reveals Pranalinga as lived Anubhava; in Vachana 1042, Prabhudeva’s grace reveals the Beginningless, straightens the mind, shows the subtle path, and removes doubt.

Aikya Sthala Vachana 1154 — The Revelation of Linga-Aikya

Aikya Vachana 1154 advances this teaching by showing Chennabasavanna as the one who establishes the Fivefold Achara, makes firm the experiential path of Shatsthala, reveals the mystery of Prana-Linga and Linga-Prana, removes delusion, and shows Linga-Aikya. This is the natural Aikya fulfillment of Vachana 1042. In Sharana Vachana 1042, Prabhudeva reveals the Beginningless, straightens the mind, and removes doubt; in Aikya Vachana 1154, the Guru’s revealing work reaches its consummation as Linga-Aikya itself is shown, and the seeker’s identity is transformed before Kudalasangama Deva.
